OFOFO interviews W4... omoge waaa gba control!

**W4 EXCLUSIVE: 'A COUPLE OF LADIES JUST MADE STRAIGHT FOR ME AND DIPPED THEIR HANDS IN MY PANTS'***
The name Adewale Adepoju might not ring a bell to Nigerian music lovers, but mention ‘W4′, and there’s more than a flicker of recognition in the eyes of many youths who follow and enjoy urban Afro pop music. This Osun State native is currently the rave of the moment, especially with his latest track, a hit single titled ‘Kontrol’.
W4, or ‘Mr. Wonder’, is getting more and more attention from fans and others, especially with his re-branded Fela-esque image, even though he has been in the industry for a while now. In this interview with NET, he talks about his music, his art, his new image and how he handles the fame and, of course, the increased attention from women…

What was growing up like for you?

I grew up in a very strict household. My parents didn’t even know I was doing music until my first video. I was involved in a lot of social activities in my secondary school, under curfew you know. I had limited time I needed to be at home, limited time I needed to go out and all that. But I’m an example of a good character, if I may say so. Despite the fact that I was doing music, I never let it get to my head and disobey my parents; because that’s the way I was nurtured.

Your latest single ‘Kontrol’ is currently in heavy rotation in clubs and enjoys regular airplay both on the radio and television. Is this the kind of music you’ll be doing now?

Well, basically, I do R&B, but on my sophomore album which I am about to drop soon, you’ll find a lot of Afro influence. Basically, after I debuted my first album ‘Temperature’ in 2005, which had the big hit, ‘Solo‘, I was on tour in Europe under the Hypertek umbrella. And while I was touring the world, going to different countries, I used that time to re-think my strategy, on my music, brand and even personality. So basically I came up with the idea of infusing Afro into my music, my art and my dress code, in fact, into my entire persona. So, yes, to an extent, the music has been influenced by the great Fela Anikulapo Kuti.

Indeed it has, at least judging by your new look. Tell us about the costume..

Well I’d say it was of course inspired by Fela, and remains essentially the same, but with a little innovation on my part. Whereas Fela’s pants go all the way down, mine don’t. Fela’s pants don’t come with pockets, unlike mine. And my shirts of course is a bit different. If you call me a ‘trendy’ Fela, I wouldn’t mind much, because I have made so many youths come to love and identify with the Fela brand.

Is it right to assume you’re trying to bring this neo-Afrobeat back to the mainstream?

Afro never died, just like Fela never died, despite the fact that he is not here with us physically. So his relevance in music and the struggle is very much felt. But I am not trying to imbibe the whole Fela persona or character; I’m just mixing that with my R&B style. And you know the word is ‘innovation’, don’t forget, I do music and the business of music. I have love for the art and when you’re doing a business you need to create the right product, the right brand. And for me, creating this brand has given me a bigger niche in the industry and I’m being recognised faster now, if you even see my shadow, you’ll know I’m the one!

So far, how has the new image been accepted?

Of course a lot of people, especially the young ones appreciate it, even those who had not really heard of Fela or encountered him before now. They now take time out to study Fela a bit you know, to understand where I’m coming from. But they are already loving it, I blended the brand perfectly, colours, costume, you know, so yeah, they accept and enjoy it.

Has there been any word from the Kuti family, positive or negative, concerning your look?

The Kuti family and I have good rapport, especially after the release of the Kontrol video. I’ve met with all of them and it’s been good understanding between us. In fact they are proud that someone else is carrying on their father’s legacy and doing it well and they are proud of it.

Has the money been rolling in for you?

Well the brand is fresh and as far as money is concerned, well what can I say? We thank God (laughs).

How has the reception been from the ladies?

Well it’s been fun all the way, the love from both the male and the female fans has been awesome. But let me tell you, if the male fans are going gaga over the brand, you can imagine the reaction of the females. But basically I don’t segregate; putting them together makes me who I am, so yes, I got love for everybody.

What’s the craziest experience you’ve ever had with your female fans?

Well, and this was before even ‘Kontrol‘. I remember a show where I performed in UNILAG, quite a while back, and as I got into the crowd, a couple of ladies just made straight for me and dipped their hands into my pants and grabbed my crotch! I’m telling you. Now with the Fela persona and all, I’ve had ladies all trying to get a feel of me because my pants are a bit tighter and they think what they see here (motions towards his pubic area) is probably stuffed. I mean, dem go just put hand there dey feel am. I surprise no be small, because I even know some of the ladies but never thought they could do that. Some of dem na (Sound) Sultan de tell dem say I put foam there! (General laughter)

What was your reaction when you were groped during the
performance?

I didn’t panic or anything, I kept doing my thing, I be man na! (Laughter around).

‘Kontrol’ to a lot of people means many things but many think it’s sexually suggestive. What do you mean when you say ‘Omoge wa gba Kontrol’?

Well, Kontrol is a normal slang that has been around. To me, it just means good things. Everybody needs ‘kontrol’, I do, you do, everybody, even (President) Jonathan sef need ‘kontrol’. When performing this song, I make the ladies forget whatever problems they may be facing and use ‘kontrol’ as an outlet for them to unwind.

Is W4 in a romantic relationship, or are there any signs wedding bells may be ringing anytime soon?
No, and I don’t have any plan of going into such for now. My fans are my priority, so for me, a long term commitment or marriage is not in the cards for now.

Who are you working with on your second album?

Well, this my second album, which I titled ‘Mr Wonder’, features young and capable hands, very vibrant hands. I’m working with a lot of talented people, like J Fem, who created the Kontrol beat. Very fresh and vibrant. I also have J Sleek, Jiggy jeg, you know, a lot of them. Basically this album should be able to have something for everyone, both young and old.

If you weren’t into music…

(Cuts in) if I wasn’t a musician, I’d be a doctor. No doubt I’d have been a doctor; I always had a passion for that. But anyway, I am already a doctor, seeing as my music heals souls.

The concept for the ‘Kontrol’ video is unique. Was it what you visualised when you initially recorded the song?

Initially we (W4 and video director Clarence Peters) had a meeting where we discussed this. You know I’m the brand and I wanted some things to be in the video. I had a lot of concepts but I had to seek the director’s take too, you know, to bring his professionalism to bear. So me and Clarence (Peters) sat down and came up with what you will agree is a perfect video. Already, the song has picked up an award, the NMVA for best Afro video last year (2011), less than a month after the release of the video, so of course, it is sure going places.

So, looking ahead, what are the plans for the future, local and international collaborative efforts and all?

Of course I will be doing one or two collaborations, both internationally and back home, but you know, just keep your fingers crossed and watch as things happen. This is very important to me you should watch out for me, as I constantly continue to re-invent myself to bring out the best, even sixty years from now

OFOFO: IDCABASA TURNS MAN OF GOD

ACE MUSIC PRODUCER CUM MUSICIAN ID CABASSA TURNS GOD'S MINISTER
Story by AKINNAGBE AKINTOMIDE/NIGERIAFILMS.COM

Olumide Ogunade a.k.a ID Cabasa is synonymous with 9ice’s Gongo Aso, having produced all the tracks on that award winning album. That’s just one of his numerous hits.

Cabassa is a confirmed hit-maker as his bouquet of awards, received directly and indirectly testify. His hits range from Ajasa’s ‘O ti Ya’ and ‘Le Fenu so’ to Banky’s ‘Capable (Remix)’, ‘Shayo’ by Durella, ‘RuggedyBaba’ by Ruggedman and ‘Kpo Kpo di Kpo’ by Faze, just to mention a few.

The news now is that the suave looking beat merchant cum singer , has turned a new leaf and has been busy serving in the Lord’s vineyard.

According to sources, Cabasa, alongside nine other members of Global Impact Church were being recognized for their service to the ministry and also rewarded for their impact in the church. The father of two was also ordained as a minister in the church.

While fans and friends continue pouring encomiums on Cabasa for the new phase of his life, whether the gifted producer of secular music will give all up for God, is now the question on the lips of his many followers.

OFOFO : 2FACE speaks about his coming 6th baby. says he is a womanizer

'm a womanizer? I don't even know that I womanize" - 2face Idibia

"I didn't get this from my father. My father is not a
womaniser. That I know. I have never caught my
father with another woman. He is very faithful to my mother. I am also not a womanizer. Yes it
happens that I have more women in my life. It is
the price I have to pay for being a star.

I didn't plan to have more than one woman in my life. I didn't plan my life to be the way it is now but no regrets. I love my kids. Right now, I have three women in my
life who have five kids for me (and expecting a 6th
one) and I sincerely don't know how I'm able to
cope with three women.

Fela had over two dozen
wives but I'm not Fela. I can never be another Fela. I have three women but I'm saying a big NO to
Fela's kind of polygamy. I don't even know what
these women see in me (Oh yeah, Tuface? lol).

I used to look into the mirror sometimes and wonder, what it is
that they see in me." -

2face told a correspondant when
they asked him about womanizing and regrets.....

So he doesn't know why women want him? Dear
Tuface, you're good looking, you're talented, you're famous, you're humble, you have a great heart and you're rich. What more?

OFOFO interviews DAVIDO.... e maa damiduro yeeeehhhh. emi mr olofofo!

DAVIDO - EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEW

These days, no party or club night is complete without the latest hit song from this 19-year-old. David Adedeji Adeleke, better known as Davido, is a bit of a wunderkind, having been in the music game for six years already. He stopped by Nigerian Entertainment Today’s offices to talk about his background, why he doesn’t see Wizkid as his competition, and why he didn’t ‘Occupy Nigeria’.

Who was David before Davido?

Before I did music, I was into music, being around the industry, always in the studio. It was something I always wanted to do. But now that I’m in the operations, it comes naturally to me; when I go for shows, I don’t really think about the money. I’m going there to entertain, to make people dance and make them happy. It’s a good feeling that when people see you, they get happy. I’m happy as well that I’m doing what I love.

Where were you born?

Atlanta, Georgia, U.S.A

You grew up there?

No. I was born there and moved back to Nigeria when I was like two years old. When I was about 16, I went back to the U.S for like a year, then later came back to write the Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam.

Which part of Lagos did you grow up?

I grew up in Lagos, Ikeja, GRA, then moved to the Island in 2005.

How many are you in your family?

Five and I am the last. I have two sisters, two brothers.

When did you start music production?

I started producing when I was 13. I began from being a studio rat to recording songs; that was at Enough Records Studio at Ikota shopping complex, then moved to other places.

How long have you been producing music officially?

It’s going to be a year in March.

Which instruments do you play?

I used to play the saxophone but now I’m on the keyboard.

How interested are your parents in your music career?

I’m the first person in my family, my generation that has gone into music. My mom passed away; my dad kept saying I needed to go back to school. But really, it was when ‘Dami duro‘ dropped that he knew I was serious with music. With ‘Back When’, I was doing shows upon shows; he thought it was serious but not really. I performed ‘ Dami duro ‘ at my sister’s show in December, which he attended, the crowd was massive. I sang to him and everything.

Before ‘Back when‘ which other songs had you released?

I did a recording with one of my cousins, MP. We were both pushing it then, but it didn’t work out. ‘Back when‘ was the first song I released, I dropped it when I was in London.

What made you come back to Nigeria?

Some of my friends advised me to come back, that they were making money and that the music industry in Nigeria is easier to penetrate. I had fun over there, I had money but there was no passion. I was determined to start something, no matter my age.

How did you hook up with your manager Asa Asika?

We’ve been friends before high school, I told him my plans. He was just helping me at first then I later hooked up with him, then he became my manager and we pushed things.

People are comparing you to Wizkid, how do you see this comparison, and do you see him as a competitor?

I’m actually with him most of the time. We sometimes talk about it, laugh about it; we go on Twitter and look at blogs. I don’t know why people weigh us together. I don’t believe in turn by turn; Why can’t Wizkid have a number one song in Abuja and I have another one in Port Harcourt or somewhere else and everyone carries it together; no competition as such. I see him as a colleague, maybe if I didn’t know him personally; but I do. We are even planning some things together, so cool.

How do you feel about the buzz surrounding you?

It’s fast and crazy. When I came out, apart from Wizkid’s album that was out then, which was hot, there wasn’t really much music releases. So I was like let me use that advantage. I know that I had good music so I went back to the studio, worked in some stuff, came out with ‘Back When’, and shot the video. I had support even from Wizkid, Naeto C, D’banj and some others.

What inspires you to make music?

The streets. People look at me like this guy’s dad is rich and stuff. Even the ‘Dami duro‘ song, I got the inspiration from one of my guys on the streets. They usually call me ‘Omo baba olowo’. Most of my songs all have Yoruba in it, I want to confuse them. People look at me like I don’t have to do what I’m doing but it’s not about whose money but your money; it’s about my dream; it’s about doing my own thing.

Which artistes have inspired you over the years?

The likes of Mo’Hits, Wizkid, D’banj, Wande Coal and Flavour. Hopefully, we are going to do some crazy work this year; 2012, no play.

A lot of people like your song; how are you reacting to the reception?

It’s been crazy. I can’t do a lot of things I used to do anymore. I can’t even go to Shoprite; it’s like a gift and a curse at the same time. When I got into the game at first, I was like I just want to be there, I don’t want to blow but when everything bloomed, I was like, wow, I thank God. My first major break was at the Music Meets Runway show and from there I built on it. Before, when I went for shows, I’d wonder if people would like the song, but now it’s normal.

Your stage presence is quite different from other fast rising artists. How did you develop it?

Even before ‘Back when‘, all the shows I’ve had I’ve been always the same way, even if people don’t know the song, an entertainer should be able to go somewhere and rock it. There’s a difference between being an artiste and an entertainer. D’banj , Psquare, Wizkid and the likes are entertainers that’s why they are up there. I love people who make good music in Nigeria, and shoot good videos but I feel like this whole thing is in-built. I’m sure with all this things I have, if I don’t have this confidence, I won’t be where I am today. It’s not always all about the song; some people have big songs, but don’t do shows.

Could you say having money has helped make your career bigger?

I don’t believe that; if I go on that route, they will suck me out because they will think that there’s a lot. There are many people I approached at my beginning stages; I introduced myself to them and all but… now they are like, ‘you are my boy’. In the industry, I’m not looking at anybody; I’m going on my own. If you don’t like me, you don’t; anyone that does well, I give them their credit.

Girls, Girls, Girls…tell us about them

No major girl for now. I’m just having fun. If I do meet a girl, now will be the time to log on/off. I’ve not really seen anyone for now; I’m on my hustle, on my drive.

What about school?

I’m studying Business Administration, 300 Level in Babcock University.

How are you managing school and music?

It’s crazy.

How do your lecturers treat you?

They bug me a lot. Sometimes, they intentionally try to test me like, ‘oh, I’m going to pick on this dude today’. I laugh with them and sometimes I’m like those are my fans. To me, it doesn’t matter. I just have to do what I have to do.

Do you think if you weren’t the one producing your music, you would still make hits?

Being my own producer helps a lot because I can produce exactly what I want. Even if I’m not the producer, I can tell a producer exactly what I want but I will take it to my studio, rearrange the whole thing and make some changes.

Do you miss your mum?

Yeah, I do. I was young though but I’m sure if she was here, she will be rocking all the songs.

What’s your relationship with your dad?

It’s very good. I go over to see him from time to time.

What’s your stand on the subsidy issue?

Well, the people voted him in, if they double the price, triple your hustle.

You weren’t at Ojota during the protest?

I felt I couldn’t go there to sing ‘emi omo baba olowo’, to me I feel some of the artistes that went there to sing, did that to promote their albums not for the right reasons. Why do you have to dress up, take a picture, upload on twitter and tweet, I’m at Ojota. Why don’t you share your money or buy fuel and share it or just do something that will touch the people.

What’s one word that describes Davido?

Different; if I’m in a room with stars that are bigger than I am, I will stand out. I don’t care, I could jump in the crowd, my facial expressions are different, and my shows are different.

When can we expect a full album?

For now, I’m not really working on an album but on songs and hits. I’m sure this year, not particular about the date, but there will be something. My fans are going to get tired of me, trust me. I have plans; I’m working on some international stuff. We also have about three marketers already.
